The Intonational Structure of Chickasaw
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes the principal features of the intonational system of Chickasaw, a Muskogean language spoken in southcentral Oklahoma. Results of the study are as follows. The Intonational Phrase (IP) consists of one or more Accentual Phrases (AP) which can be larger or smaller than a word. The underlying tonal pattern of the AP is [LHHL]. Chickasaw statements are characteristically marked by a H% final boundary tone, whereas both Wh and yes/no questions are realized with a L% final boundary tone. The nuclear pitch accent in an IP falls on the final syllable in statements. In questions, the conditions governing nuclear pitch accent placement involve sensitivity to syllable weight.

An autosegmental/metrical model of Chickasaw intonation
This chapter presents a formal model for transcribing the intonational properties of Chickasaw, a Western Muskogean language spoken in south-central Oklahoma by perhaps a few hundred speakers. The proposed model adopts many elements and assumptions of the autosegmental/metrical (AM) framework originally developed to analyse English intonational structure (Pierrehumbert 1980, Silverman et al. 19...

While the realization of focus in languages which express focus either syntactically or prosodically or through a combination of both prosody and syntax has been studied relatively extensively, e.g. English (Beckman and Pierrehumbert 1986), Korean (Cho 1990, Jun 1993), Chichewa (Kanerva 1990), Bengali (Hayes and Lahiri 1991, Lahiri and Fitzpatrick-Cole 1999), Shanghai Chinese (Selkirk and Shen ...
متن کاملSome Phonetic Structures of Chickasaw
This paper provides a quantitative phonetic study of Chickasaw, a Muskogean language spoken in Oklahoma. Basic properties such as vowel quality, voice onset time, and consonant closure duration are examined and compared with the corresponding properties in other languages of the world. We also examine quantitative properties of the typologically unusual three-way length distinction in Chickasaw...
متن کاملImpact of growing environment on chickasaw blackberry (Rubus L.) aroma evaluated by gas chromatography olfactometry dilution analysis.
The aroma extract of Chickasaw blackberry (Rubus L.) was separated with silica gel normal phase chromatography into six fractions. Gas chromatography-olfactometry (GCO) was performed on each fraction to identify aroma active compounds. Aroma extraction dilution analysis (AEDA) was employed to characterize the aroma profile of Chickasaw blackberries from two growing regions of the United States:...

On November 27, 2001, the Supreme Court ruled in Chickasaw v. United States that Native American gaming (NAG) firms are subject to federal excise and occupational taxes. Prior to the decision, these firms had been exempt from all federal taxation. We hypothesize that Chickasaw improves the competitive position of publicly traded gaming firms and their suppliers by leveling the playing field for...
